This lecture will present data from an ethnography of funk in São Paulo, carried out between 2016 and 2020. São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil, and has many neighborhoods located in peripheral areas known as favelas. Brazilian funk is the most popular music among the young populations that live in the favelas. It is worth saying that it is a different genre from North American funk, because it mixes elements of Afro-Brazilian traditions. We will discuss some historical aspects of the genesis of this music and how it acts socially within these territories. Funk's social agency is linked to themes that are very present in the lives of these young people - sexuality, criminality and social inequalities. Our central question in class is - how does funk act socially?
